Budget Friendly Online Educational Games

This Post May Contain Affiliate Links - Disclosure Policy

October 17, 2011

This is a guest post from Katie at You. Me. Us.

Do your kids need some extra practice in certain subjects? Are they struggling with book work and worksheets? Maybe you want to allow them some time on the computer, but you want to kill two birds with one stone and want them to actually learn something while they are playing?

Online educational games can help in all of these circumstances. And they can do so without necessarily making a dent in your budget. Just because a site is inexpensive, or even free, doesn’t mean the site is lower in quality than other paid sites. It certainly doesn’t mean that it isn’t as much fun for your children either.

A simple web search will turn up more results that you can hope to get through in a day, but you can narrow your search if you are looking for games in a specific subject area (like math games, spelling games, etc.). Let your children take a look with you. Often, having their own say in the matter can make them more interested in participating with the games.

Here are a few game sites that are free or very affordable:

Elementary games with Time4Learning – Time4Learning is a curriculum program that can be used as a homeschool curriculum, after school supplement program or for summer enrichment. Even so, it isn’t just about lessons and quizzes. They have some excellent online games for elementary aged kiddos. They even have games at the Preschool level, as well as the middle school level. Time4Learning isn’t free, but if you are looking for a curriculum or supplemental program, it is reasonably priced and the game access is included in the monthly fee.

Vocabulary and Spelling City – This is an excellent online resource, not just for game playing. While there are a great many spelling and vocabulary games that your children can play, there are additional features such as the ability to create handwriting worksheets, make flash cards, and even do their spelling test online. You can sign up for this site for free. With the free account, you can still get a lot of use and have a lot of fun with it. If you did want more features and activities, you can sign up for as little as $25 a year (this annual price is for up to 5 kids!).

Learning Games for Kids – This is one of the best sites out there in my opinion. It has something for everyone, at just about any grade level. Geography games, math games, health games, keyboarding games, and even art and music games; chances are if you go looking for it, you will find it here. What is my favorite thing about this website? It’s totally FREE!

These sites are some of mine and my children’s favorites. They, along with others you find, may become some of yours as well!

Katie Shuler, a not-so-country girl living in a very-country Georgia small town, has been homeschooling her two boys since 2005.
